Stainless steel needs 9/64 hole thru plywood and aluminum stringers. When you apply the stainless steel screw thru the wood and stringer this allows the course thread to lock and secure the decking which produces the strongest floor decking system. Zinc coated self-tapping screws are only coated with zinc and eventually rust. The self-tapping screw end usually puts an oblong hole in the plywood decking which will loosen the decking strength.
